Nello studio di Maria Llovet

-

We’ve visited the studio of Maria Llovet, Spanish artist author of Insecto and Heartbeat.

What projects are you currently working on?

I’m doing some things at the same time right now. In one hand I’m finishing the project I’ve been working on for a while. It’s called Loud and it’s about a night club, with lots of characters and crossed stories, and nearly without texts because as the music is so loud they can’t hear each other. At the same time I’m starting to develop my next work but this is still a secret 🙂

Which instruments/tools do you use to draw?

Until a while ago I was using an Intuos 3 tablet with my computer. Then I started using an ipad pro+ apple pencil to draw, and it was quite a change. Very refreshing to finally get back to looking at what you’re drawing directly instead of at the screen. I still use the Intuos+computer but most of the process is done in ipad.

Do you have any peculiar habits or routines before starting to draw?

What really helps me is to have a schedule, generally for the week. Having a short-time objective in mind helps me organize my time better. If I don’t do it I can spend hours in front of the computer and still not get any work done.

Do you have books or comic books you keep close by when you draw?

Right now I don’t keep any specific books with me at all times, but here are some that have been indispensables at some point: Rakuda ga Waru by Katsuya Terada, Tekkon Kinkreet Art book (Kuro Side), Fashion flat drawing guide, Valentina compilation by Guido Crepax, Midori by Suehiro Maruo, Sin City by Frank Miller.

Are there certain objects in your studio which you’re particularly attached to?

I would say two original drawings by Shintaro Kago that I bought some years ago when he came to the Barcelona manga salon. I love his work. Also I treasure a Ghost in the Shell II gynoid jointed figure (you can see next to the computer on the first picture) that was part of a japanese collectors edition of the DVD.
