We have been in the studio of Tony Millionaire, the author of Maakies and Sock Monkey. We took some pics of his drawing table and we spoke with him about his works. Enjoy.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on many projects right now, as usual. A ten-page SpongeBob story written by the cartoonist Kaz for the SpongeBob Comic Book. Also, I’m finishing part three of the Billy Hazelnuts Trilogy. This one is called Billy Hazelnuts and the Metallic Worm. Every week I draw my weekly comic strip, which appears in many weekly papers around the world, MAAKIES. And I’m very excited about the development of a film about the Sock Monkey, which I’m working on with the animator Matt Danner. Here’s a sneak preview: www.sockmonkeymovie.com.
Which are your drawing instruments?
I use 3 ply bristol board. A #4H pencil. A Rotring Artpen, but I don’t use the watery ink that comes with. I get good German ink cartridges on ebay.
Do you have any rituals before you start drawing?
Yeah, I must have at least 3 bottles of beer inside me before I draw. That’s why I draw at night.
Which authors are your reference point?
Herman Melville, Patrick O’Brian, Mark Twain, A. A. Milne and Ernest Shepard, George Herriman, E. C. Segar.
Tell us about this object.
This is a snapping turtle’s tail I bought at a street market in New York. It look like a dinosaur’s tail.
